Rutherford County is located in the foothills of North Carolina approximately one hour from Asheville, Charlotte, Hickory and Greenville/Spartanburg, SC. The county has tremendous growth opportunity in the Retail Trade Area of Rutherfordton, Spindale and Forest City. In a recent retail study conducted by Arnett Muldrow, it was noted that there is a $640 million leakage outside the Primary and Secondary Trade Areas each year. A large percentage of residents shop in the four metro areas located within an hour of Rutherford County.
With a major opportunity to grow and recruit retail in this area, a formal Commercial Development program was created. While not apart of the Retail Trade Zone, the towns of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock are located approximately 20 miles west of Rutherfordton within Rutherford County. Lake Lure is a private lake with public access that is enjoyed by thousands from spring until fall. Also, Chimney Rock Park has recently been named a new North Carolina State Park.
